Ingredients

  • 400 gram package tempeh
  • Avocado or olive oil spray
  • Seasonings to taste (suggestions below):
  • Onion powder
  • Garlic powder
  • Smoked paprika
  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • Optional: Nutritional yeast for a cheesy flavor, chili powder for heat, cumin for earthiness

Method

  1. Place the block of tempeh on a cutting board. Using a sharp knife, thinly slice the tempeh into even pieces. Aim for consistent thickness to ensure even cooking.
  2. Place the tempeh slices in a single layer on a baking tray. Spray generously with avocado or olive oil.
  3. Sprinkle your chosen seasonings generously over the tempeh slices. Make sure to coat both sides for maximum flavour. You can either toss the slices in the seasonings after spraying with oil or sprinkle them directly on the tray.
  4. Preheat your oven to a moderate temperature (around 180°C or 350°F). Bake the tempeh chips for approximately 15 minutes on one side, or until they start to turn golden brown and crispy.
  5. Carefully flip the tempeh slices over with a spatula. Bake for an additional 10 minutes, or until they are golden brown and crispy on both sides. Keep an eye on them as baking times may vary depending on the thickness of your slices and your oven.
  6. Once the tempeh chips are crispy, remove the baking tray from the oven and let them cool slightly on the tray. They will crisp up further as they cool.
  7. Store the completely cooled tempeh chips in an airtight jar or container at room temperature. They should stay crispy for several days.
